 The InstituteDevelopment Strategy     

Development Strategy

During its ten years of operation, the Hellenic Institute of Transport has been active in many different research sectors.

The latest goals of H.I.T. include the following:

  1. Implementation of ICT – Information Communication Technologies in the field of Transport.
  2. Creation of databases to support staff training and research activities.  
  3. Road Safety and mobility issues, especially for vulnerable road users, such as PTW riders, elderly drivers and travelers with disabilities. 
  4. Development of applications and prototypes for the improvement of freight transport and logistics.
  5. Transport security
  6. Support the national transport policy and decision – making 
  7. European Transport Research Integration towards the ETRA (European Transport Research Area).  

Furthermore, the Hellenic Institute of Transport is expanding its research activities over to new important sectors for the future of transportation in Greece and in Europe, such as: 

  • Evaluation of environmental impacts due to the operation of transport systems.
  • Energy issues/demand in transportation.
  • Impact of driving style, traffic control, and the various transport policies on energy consumption. 
  • Investigation of the impacts of climate change on transport networks.
  • Design, management and operation of pipeline transportation systems
  • The use of socio economic evaluation techniques and economic analysis tools for assessing the impacts of transport policies.
  • The assessment and analysis of the wider socioeconomic implications and external effects of the transport system to different population groups (equity considerations).
  • Pricing and funding of transport services, transport financing including different types of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), evaluation of transport investments and internalization of externals costs.
  •  Air Transport and Airports.
